Victoria Fulbright Masters Scholarship

Victoria Fulbright Masters Scholarship

History and purpose:

For the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research at Victoria, the University offers one scholarship to a Fulbright US Graduate Scholar about to commence the second year of a full-time, research-focussed Master’s degree. Only those students enrolled solely for a thesis of 90 points or above are eligible to apply. In some cases this will be Part 2 of a two-year Master’s degree and will usually have the course code 591.

Application Process:

Applications for these scholarships must be made on the forms obtainable from the Scholarships Website: www.vuw.ac.nz/scholarships or from the Scholarships Office or directly from Fulbright NZ. Scholarship applicants must contact the School in which they wish to enrol so that their research proposal and the feasibility of supervision can be assessed. Enrolling as a Masters student and applying for a Victoria Masters Scholarship are two separate processes. The holding of Victoria Fulbright Masters Scholarship is conditional upon the scholarship recipient gaining enrolment as a Masters student.

Selection Process:

All offers for Victoria Masters Scholarships will be made in late December of the year of application. Some applicants may be placed on a reserve list and will not be finally notified of the success or otherwise of their applications until as late as the end of February of the following year. Please note if your application is unsuccessful this will be by email only

Criteria

1. Applications are sought from those who are eligible at the time of application, or who will have become eligible within three months of application, to enrol for a Master’s degree by thesis 90 points or above.

2. Applicants would normally be expected to have completed a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree Part 1 demonstrating academic achievement equivalent to a First-Class Honours degree from a New Zealand University.

3. Scholarships shall be awarded solely on the basis of academic merit by the University Scholarships Committee, a sub-committee of the University Research Committee.

4. A scholarship shall lapse in the event that the scholarship recipient fails to become eligible to enrol for the 90 point thesis component of a Masters degree within two months of being awarded the scholarship.

5. The scholarship shall be tenable for a period of up to one year except as otherwise provided in this statute.

6. Scholarship recipients will sign the Postgraduate Research Scholarship Contract. The Head of School [or Programme] and primary supervisor will sign the contract indicating that they are aware of the terms and conditions of the scholarship.

7. The tenure of every scholarship shall commence on a date to be determined in each case by the University Scholarships Committee. The date of commencement shall normally be not later than two months after the scholarship has been accepted by the scholarship recipient.

8. The scholarship stipend shall be paid to each scholarship recipient in three equal instalments. The first such payment shall be made by the Scholarships Office as soon as practicable after confirmation of enrolment. A small allowance will be paid towards the cost of producing the thesis. The thesis allowance entitlement will lapse if it is not taken up within eighteen months.

9. Tuition fees will be paid on confirmation of enrolment and the presentation of the fees assessment documentation to the Scholarships Office.

10. Approval for the co-tenure of a Victoria Fulbright Masters Scholarship with other awards that total more than $6,000 must be sought from the University Scholarships Committee. The co-tenure of other awards may result in a reduction in the value of the Victoria Fulbright Masters Scholarship stipend.
