There are different set of criteria set for each step of the examination for USMLE step 1, 2 CK & CS, and Step 3. The table below lists the eligibility criteria for Step 1, Step 2 CS, Step 2 CK, and Step 3.

Step 1 Eligibility

  1. Student should be enrolled in, or a graduate from a medical school outside of the US and Canada which is listed in World Directory of Medical Schools.
  2. Student should meet the certification eligibility criteria by ECFMG Certificate.
  3. Must meet eligibility criteria at the time of application.

Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK Eligibility

  1. Student should be enrolled in, or a graduate from a medical school outside of the US and Canada which is listed in World Directory of Medical Schools.
  2. Student should meet the certification eligibility criteria by ECFMG Certificate.
  3. Must meet eligibility criteria at the time of application.

Step 3 Eligibility

  1. Clear step 1, step 2 CK and Step 2 CS.
  2. Candidate must possess an MD equivalent degree from any US or Canadian medical school, which is listed in World Directory of Medical School.
  3.  Possess valid fifth pathway certificates issued through 31 December 2009.
  4. If candidate does not hold the fifth pathway certificates, have to obtain ECFMG certification.

Candidates must know if the institute they are pursuing their medical studies from, is listed in the World Directory of Medical School. To check if your medical school is listed in World Directory of Medical Schools, go to “wdoms” website, and click on “Search the World Directory” tab. It had a drop down menu to choose the country, and after filling the details of your city and collage, you can check whether the college is listed or not.
